This first statistic is staggering. Over 1/3 of Americans are clinically obese (33.4% in recent studies). Yes people, this includes children. It wasn’t hard for the researcher to arrive at this figure, just think about our culture and all the fast food and video games it has to offer. As a child growing up in suburban New Jersey, playtime did not include Burger King and Play station, yet a broomstick and some tennis balls for an all out competitive game of stickball!! When Momma Connie called, dinner was served completed with protein, carbs, and fat-¦.NOT only FAT! Now a day, the national past time, and all other outdoor activities, have been replaced with video games and a quick hunger fix at a local fast food restaurant. Yes, times have changed. However, now more than ever, we need to be more conscious of our decisions and promote a healthier lifestyle potentially saving our children from this obesity abyss. Studies show, children of obese parents are 13 times more likely to be obese as well. It is critical for Americans to stop this statistic from growing. Prevention -good nutrition and exercise- will be the key to any further damage obesity has already caused. On-set diabetes should not be one of the many diseases that can cause our children’s lifespan to be shorter than their parents. Good news is it is easier to prevent childhood obesity rather than treat the disease itself. Parents, caregivers and friends need to begin by promoting a healthy lifestyle and modeling healthy eating habits and attitudes! Here are some things you can do to make a difference: 1) Take your child with you to the gym, yoga, bootcamp, etc-¦It is so important for your child to see you (not only their equals) exercising. 2) Cook with your child: While cooking a healthy meal go over portion sizes, and important vitamins and minerals. 3) Participate in a race with your child. A triathlon goes a long way in family bonding and team building.
Healthy meals and snacks provide nutrition for growing children. Increased physical activity reduces health risks and helps weight management. Nutrition education helps young children develop an awareness of good nutrition and healthy eating habits for a lifetime.
